Therapy for Malibu, California

Malibu is the one city here where I usually recommend starting with video, and I would rather say that plainly than pretend the drive is nothing. Depending on where along the coast you are, Pacific Coast Highway can be twenty-five minutes or an hour and ten, and it is not always predictable in advance.

What makes Malibu distinct clinically is not the affluence, which varies enormously, but the geography. Living somewhere beautiful and hard to reach reorganizes a social life, and a lot of what comes into sessions from here is about the consequences of distance.

Getting Here

Down the coast, honestly assessed

From Malibu Canyon or the Civic Center, PCH south to Santa Monica runs roughly twenty-five to forty minutes in ordinary conditions. From Point Dume or further west, add meaningfully to that, and closures or slides can change the picture without notice.

For clients who do want the room, the workable pattern is usually an in-person session every few weeks paired with video in between, scheduled around a trip you were already making into town rather than as a dedicated drive.

Who I See

Who comes from Malibu

Longtime residents whose families have been on the coast for generations, people in entertainment who chose the distance deliberately, Pepperdine-affiliated faculty and staff, and retirees who moved for the quiet and found more of it than they wanted.

There are also many households here that have lived through evacuation and property loss more than once. Repeated disruption produces a particular vigilance — a reflexive check of the wind and the sky in October that never quite switches off.

In the Room

What comes in from Malibu

The concerns I hear most from clients along this coast.

Geographic isolation

Friendship requires an hour of driving from somebody, so it happens less. Over years that thins a support network in a way that rarely gets named as a cause of low mood, though it frequently is one.

Standing vigilance

After repeated evacuations, alertness becomes the baseline rather than a response. We work on getting the nervous system genuine rest without asking you to pretend the risk is imaginary.

A quiet that amplifies

Solitude is restorative until it is not. Without daily interruption, a difficult internal process runs uninterrupted, and many clients notice the difference within a few weeks of starting to speak it out loud.

Telehealth

Telehealth first, the room when it suits

Secure video sessions are available anywhere in California, which for Malibu means consistent weekly work without a highway in the middle of it.

The office is in Santa Monica whenever you want to make the trip, and clients are welcome to move between the two as the season and the highway allow.
