Therapy for Venice, California

Venice is close enough to Santa Monica that some clients walk part of it. The distance is trivial; what is not trivial is that Venice produces a particular kind of adult life — porous, improvised, socially dense — and that shapes what people bring in.

The Venice client is frequently someone whose work has no edges. Founders, designers, writers, directors, people three years into a company that either works or does not. The absence of structure that made Venice appealing at thirty becomes, at forty, the reason there is no boundary between a bad quarter and a bad self.

Getting Here

Coming up from Venice

Main Street or Abbot Kinney to Ocean Park and you are at the office in under fifteen minutes most of the day. Lincoln is faster in theory and worse in practice; I would take Main.

Summer weekends are their own category. If you live south of Rose and your session is on a Saturday in July, add twenty minutes or take the video option and keep your afternoon.

Who I See

Who comes north from Venice

Creative and startup people, a lot of them self-employed, often with an income that is excellent in some years and alarming in others. Long-time Venice residents who have watched the neighborhood change around them three times. Artists and musicians who have built a life with almost no institutional safety net in it.

I also see a number of Venice clients who are in recovery, who are several years into building a stable life, and who are now dealing with what sobriety made visible rather than with substances themselves.

In the Room

What shows up from Venice

Patterns that recur among clients from this part of the coast.

Identity fused with output

When the work is the self, a rejected pitch is not a business event, it is evidence about who you are. We separate those two things deliberately, because they do not separate on their own.

Intensity read as personality

Many Venice clients have been told their whole lives that they simply feel things more. Sometimes that is true and workable. Sometimes it is an emotion-regulation difficulty nobody ever named, and naming it changes what is possible.

Community without depth

You know two hundred people here. The question I usually ask is which of them you would call at 2am, and how long the pause is before you answer.

Telehealth

Video works well from here

Venice clients often prefer telehealth, partly for parking reasons and partly because working from home is already the shape of their day. Video sessions are available anywhere in California.

When you do want to sit in a room, the office is a short drive up the coast in Santa Monica, and many people alternate depending on the week.
